Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) of the California Consortium for Urban Indian Health (CCUIH) is a visionary leader dedicated to advancing health equity, cultural sovereignty, and wellness for Urban Indian communities across California. Rooted in Indigenous values and guided by a deep commitment to justice, the ED strengthens the collective voice of Urban Indian Health Organizations — including FQHCs, Title V, and 330-funded programs — through collaboration, advocacy, and strategic partnership.

The ED ensures that CCUIH remains a trusted resource and convener — uniting community, government, and health systems to honor culture, uplift community-driven solutions, and build sustainable pathways to wellness. As a bridge between Urban Indian communities, policymakers, and public health systems, the ED leads with integrity, compassion, and vision.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Vision:

  • Champion CCUIH’s mission and vision with clarity, courage, and commitment to community-defined priorities.
  • Cultivate an organizational culture grounded in respect, belonging, and accountability.
  • Support professional growth and wellness of staff through mentoring, training, and reflective supervision practices
  • Lead strategic planning rooted in cultural values, Indigenous knowledge, and long-term sustainability.
  • Represent CCUIH as a thought leader in Urban Indian health across local, state, and national platforms.
  • Serve as a trusted resource and partner to elected officials, state leadership, county agencies, and policymakers, providing expertise on Urban Indian health systems, equity, and culturally competent care.
  • Strengthen and sustain partnerships with Urban Indian Health Organizations — including FQHCs, Title V, and 330-funded programs — to elevate collective advocacy, improve health outcomes, and advance shared goals.

Organizational and Program Management:

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of CCUIH’s programs, ensuring alignment with community needs, policy priorities, and funder requirements.
  • Support member organizations through technical assistance, collaboration, and capacity building.
  • Ensure operational excellence, organizational learning, and accountability across all initiatives.
  • Advocacy and Policy Development
  • Lead CCUIH’s advocacy agenda, championing policies that promote racial equity, strengthen Urban Indian health systems, and expand access to culturally responsive care.
  • Collaborate with Urban Indian Health Organizations, tribal and non-tribal partners, state and county agencies, and advocacy coalitions to advance shared priorities.
  • Serve as a credible, proactive voice for Urban Indian communities in policy discussions and legislative processes.

Fundraising and Resource Development:

  • Drive resource development to sustain and expand CCUIH’s mission and programs.
  • Build and nurture relationships with funders, government agencies, and philanthropic partners.
  • Oversee grant writing, compliance, and reporting to ensure transparency and fiscal integrity.
  • Financial and Operational Oversight
  • Manage CCUIH’s budget with accountability, transparency, and a sense of community stewardship.
  • Oversee financial systems, audits, and compliance with funder and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain the highest standards of governance and operational excellence.

Team and Board Engagement:

  • Recruit, support, and inspire a high-performing, culturally grounded team.
  • Partner closely with the Board of Directors, fostering shared leadership and strategic alignment.
  • Ensure open communication, shared learning, and deep collaboration among staff, board members, and partner organizations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Public Policy, Public Health, Social Work, Nonprofit Management, or an equivalent field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5–7 years in senior leadership roles, preferably in the nonprofit, healthcare, or public policy sector.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Urban Indian or Native American communities highly preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead multi-sector partnerships and advance advocacy goals across complex systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of Urban Indian health systems, including FQHCs, Title V, and 330-funded programs.
  • Strong knowledge of policy, funding, and regulatory environments affecting Urban Indian and Tribal health organizations.
  • Proven record in organizational management, staff development, and fiscal oversight.
  • Exceptional communication and advocacy skills with the ability to navigate complex political landscapes.
  • Demonstrated success in partnership-building, resource development, and systems change.
  • Unwavering commitment to advancing equity, honoring Indigenous knowledge, and fostering culturally grounded leadership.
  • Keep CCUIH’s board, staff, and members informed of emerging policy trends and opportunities for impact.
