This is the first legislation explicit to American Indians. The Act authorized the creation of Indian schools as a vehicle to take “the Indian out of the Indian.” The Act set aside funds for Christian groups and others to create such institutions. Once again, the intent was to make Indians “civilized” by abandoning their native culture, religions, languages, and lifestyles.
